"More than five thousand public and private
schools across the nation have adopted the
timeless Montessori approach to education,
of which this book is the cornerstone. The Absorbant Mind takes its title
from the phrase that [Dr. Montessori] coined to characterize
the child's most crucial development stage,
the first six years of [human] life." (Child of the World, 2002-2003
edition, a Michael Olaf company.)
"This book is wonderful for the people
who are going into the field of Montessori education, actually
it is on the required list of any
teacher training program, and in there lays the misunderstanding. One must

Dr.
Montessori's Own Handbook
"Dr. Montessori's notes as to
the use and intent of Montessori curriculum tools."--Nienhuis Books &
Publications
Book Description "A short, illustrated guide to the use
of Montessori classroom materials. Describes how to set up a
'"children's house"' - an environment
for learning where children can be their own masters." (Amazon.com
editorial review.)
"Highlights basic teaching methods and
apparatus.
"This short book is like an Army basic
training manual. Montessori teaching methods are described in detail,
like recipes in a cookbook.... The systematic order achieved by the method
is described as desirable while too much variety and child/teacher interaction
is regarded as undesirable. The book warns that over-stimulating
a child's imagination could cause him or her to miss the purpose of the
lessons (tell that to Barney). The author's works have a ring of truth
throughout and are valuable because of the spirit they convey even today."

"A collection of speeches revealing

Education
for a New World (The Clio Montessori Series)
"The psychic life in the new-born
has already aroused great interest. The conclusion of research is that
the first two years of life are the most important. So here begins a new
path, wherein it will not be the professor [the teacher] who teaches the
child but the child who teaches the professor [the teacher]."--Nienhuis
Books & Publications
"At less than 100 pages, this book is easy
to take in, while still containing fundamental principles of Montessori's
theory of education, especially as relevant to 3- to 6-year-olds. The writing
is engaging, not academic. I can easily recommend it to be the first or
only book by Dr. Montessori for the parent of a toddler to read."--Reviewer:

"Kids don't come with instruction books,
and while there are so many filled over the brim with great information
and ideas for parents, none equals this gem. The photographs capture the
essence of respect for a child's individuality. One thought accompanies
each photo, communicating the essence of Montessori philosophy. This book
is profound in its simplicity, inspiring readers how to respectfully provide
for the child." (Amazon.com customer review.)

"A most valuable book! Every conceivable
element of the traditional Mass unfolds before the eyes of children 8 to
15 in this masterpiece. The author: famed educator Maria Montessori. She
employs abundant illustrations (36). Hundreds of childrens questions --
and not only childrens questions -- are answered. The book lends itself
to reading to smaller children, but is geared to 8 to 15 year olds. It
is narrative, not storytelling, not condescending."--Product Description
"Three major articles by Maria
Montessori, with appendices. '"The Child,"' '"Reconstruction in Education,"'
and "'Peace and Education.'"--Nienhuis Books & Publications
Book Description "This book is Montessori's own exposition
of the theory behind her innovative educational techniques. She shows parents,
teachers and administrators how to "free a child to learn through his own
efforts." (Amazon.com editorial review.)
"A classic work on child pedagogy.
"Here, Maria Montessori introduces a scientific
approach to pedagogy. The Montessori schools which she established
and developed are intended for children three to seven years of age. The
children are allowed as much freedom as possible and are provided with
"didactic materials" which are various artifacts which they can use to
educate themselves. They are supervised by a single directress whose primary
task is to observe the children and direct their efforts by explaining
to them how various didactic materials are used (it's very simple, but
nothing is obvious to a young child). This book offers some valuable concete
advice, but its primary use to me was as an introduction to the approach
of scientific pedagogy. The basic premises as I understand them are that
(1) children have a natural desire to learn and (2) one can learn how to
live in freedom and only by being free. These premises are fully supported
and fleshed out in the book. The Montessori method achieved startling results,
with four year old children (on average) learning to be masters of themselves,
disciplined, benevolent, self-confident, and capable of reading and writing.
Every educator should be familiar with Maria Montessori's work."--Vladimir

The
Secret of Childhood"Most
popular!"
"The child has a spontaneous urge
to learn! An understanding of this simple secret led to the development
of what we know of as the Montessori method. Here are thoughts on
the newborn, free choice, rewards and punishments, discipline, deviations
from normal behavior, [and] the conflict between the adult and the child.
Also [included is] a discussion of the array of materials and techniques
needed to release the learning potential of the child." (Child of the
World, 2002-2003 edition, a Michael Olaf company.)
"Maria Montessori describes the child with
warmth and the exactness of a
scientist. She also discusses the array
of materials and techniques needed to
release his learning potential." (Amazon.com
editorial review.)
"This is an important work because it highlights
what is wrong with common trends in parenting. You
learn that the parent is there to
foster a positive environment in which a child can thrive. It is not
complicated. The child will show you what
they need and when they need it. This book helps you to
recognize what the child's needs are,
but from the child's perspective. I found it to be a breath of
fresh air and wished my parents had read
it." (Amazon.com customer review.) More...

To
Educate the Human Potential (The Clio Montessori Series)
"The introduction explains that
this book is meant to follow Education for a New World, and it '"helps
teachers envisage the child's needs after age six."' This book is part
theory, part history, covering the psychology of the elementary-aged child,
the history of life on earth, and some highlights and principles of the
development of civilization..."--Reviewer: Brad S. Williams (Portland,
